Almaty nightlife: a local’s guide
Almaty is Kazakhstan’s nightlife capital. Underground techno, DJ bars, cocktail bars, hidden speakeasies, and in summer, open-air parties in the mountains, the desert and the canyons.
We’re the KET-TIK team. We live here and go out here, so this guide covers what visitors ask us most before a night out.
Quick tips before you go
- When to go: Thursday to Saturday is when the city comes alive. Weeknights are quieter, but cocktail bars are good any day.
- Bring ID: Carry your passport or a photo of it. Many venues check age at the door.
- Dress code: Mostly smart casual. Some clubs are selective at the door, so skip sportswear and flip-flops.
- Reservations: Book a table at popular bars, and on any weekend night. Many venues take bookings via Instagram or WhatsApp.
- Getting around: Use a taxi app (Uber, Yandex Go or inDrive) and avoid street cabs. Late-night rides are cheap by Western standards.
- Payments: Cards work almost everywhere, but keep some cash (tenge) for small venues and tips.
- Open airs: Mountain parties happen all year round. Check the date and transport in advance, since many spots are outside the city.
What a night out in Almaty looks like
Evenings start late. Bars fill up from 9–10 pm, DJs in bars usually play from 10 pm, and club nights and raves get busy after midnight and peak between 2 and 5 am.
Most parties happen on Friday and Saturday nights. On weekdays the city is quieter, but DJ bars and live music bars work every day.
The local scene is small and friendly. Many parties are run by promo crews rather than by clubs, so the same venue can host techno on Friday and hip-hop on Saturday. Following the crews is the best way to find good nights.
Where to go out: the main areas
There is no single “bar street” in Almaty, but the city centre is walkable and most bars are within 15–20 minutes of each other.
The densest area is the centre between Abay Avenue, Dostyk Avenue, Zhibek Zholy Street and Nauryzbay Batyr Street, including the pedestrian Panfilov Street and the streets around Kunaev and Bogenbay Batyr. A walking bar crawl here is easy.
Upscale bars and rooftops are around Esentai, Al-Farabi Avenue and in hotels. Underground parties often take place in former industrial spaces, basements and art spaces outside the centre; the address is sometimes published only on the day.
How much a night costs
Almaty is cheaper than most European capitals. Approximate prices in tenge (₸), with US dollars at roughly 500 ₸ per $1:
| Entry to a DJ bar | often free | $0 |
|---|---|---|
| Club night or rave | 3,000–10,000 ₸ | $6–20 |
| Big event with an international headliner | 10,000–25,000 ₸ | $20–50 |
| Cocktail | 3,000–5,000 ₸ | $6–10 |
| Beer (0.5 l) | 1,200–2,500 ₸ | $2.5–5 |
| Taxi across the centre at night | 1,000–2,500 ₸ | $2–5 |
Prices change; each event page on KET-TIK shows the entry price when the organiser has announced it, and a link to tickets.
Face control and dress code
Some clubs and many techno parties have face control. Come in a calm mood and sober, in a small group, and expect to be asked what party you came for.
There is rarely a strict dress code. For techno nights black and comfortable clothes are a safe choice; upscale bars and rooftops expect smart casual. Sportswear and large groups of men are the most common reasons to be turned away.
Many underground parties do not allow photos or videos on the dance floor. Respect it: it is part of why these nights feel free.
Age limits and documents
Clubs and parties are usually 18+, and many bars are 21+. The age limit is set by the venue or the organiser; when it is announced, it is on the event page.
Bring your passport: ID is often checked at the door, and a foreign passport is accepted. A photo of the passport on your phone is useful as a backup, but the door may ask for the original.
Cash, cards and tips
Visa and Mastercard work in almost all bars and clubs, and contactless payment is common. Locals mostly pay with the Kaspi app by QR code, which visitors usually cannot use.
Keep some cash in tenge for small bars, the door at underground parties and the coat check.
A 10% service charge is often already in the bill; check before adding a tip. If it is not included, 5–10% is a usual tip.
Getting there and home
Use a ride-hailing app: Yandex Go and inDrive work all night and are cheap. The Uber app works too; its rides in Kazakhstan come from Yandex Go. Avoid unofficial cars that stop on the street.
Use 2GIS for addresses: it is the most accurate map in Kazakhstan and shows entrances and floors. Every venue page on KET-TIK has a 2GIS link.
Drivers know addresses in Russian better than in English. The address on KET-TIK venue pages is written the way locals write it, so you can show it to the driver.
The metro closes around midnight, so plan on a taxi after a party.
Is Almaty safe at night?
Almaty is generally considered safe for a night out, and the centre is busy until late on weekends. The usual big-city precautions apply.
Take app taxis, keep an eye on your drink, agree on how you will get home before the night starts, and keep your phone charged.
Police may ask foreigners for documents; carry your passport or at least a copy and stay polite.
Will staff speak English?
In central bars and cocktail bars bartenders usually speak some English, and many menus have an English version. At the door and in taxis Russian is more common.
The crowd at electronic parties is young, used to visitors and happy to help. A few words of Russian or Kazakh go a long way: “rakhmet” means “thank you” in Kazakh.
Closing times and after-parties
Bars on weekdays usually close at 2–3 am; on Friday and Saturday many stay open until 4–6 am. Clubs and raves go on until 5–6 am, and some afterparties continue into the morning.
Shops do not sell alcohol late at night, so do not count on buying it after a bar closes.
Opening hours are on each venue page; check them before you go, especially on weekdays.
Smoking and hookah
Smoking indoors in bars and restaurants, including hookah and vapes, is restricted by law. Some venues have terraces where smoking is allowed; ask the staff.
Summer and winter
From May to September the season moves outside: rooftops, terraces and open airs in the mountains, the desert, the canyons and by the Kapchagay reservoir. Mountain parties happen in winter too. Open airs often need transport; organisers usually arrange a shuttle or share the meeting point.
Winter nights are cold, but the club season is at its busiest from October to April. In winter you can combine a day at the Shymbulak ski resort with a night out in the city.
For an open air, bring warm layers (mountain nights are cold even in summer), water and cash, and check how you will get back.
How to use KET-TIK
KET-TIK lists parties, raves, DJ bars and clubs of the local scene, with line-ups, entry prices and directions. Every event is checked by an editor before it is published.
Start with tonight’s parties or the weekend, filter by genre, and open a venue page for hours and the 2GIS route. In the app you can follow artists, venues and crews to hear about their next nights.
